Are you planning a textile printing project and wondering: DTF printing or screen printing – which is the better choice? Both processes have their strengths. In this post, we will show you when each method makes sense – and why we at Markendruckerei rely exclusively on DTF printing.
What is screen printing?
Screen printing is one of the oldest and most well-known printing methods for textiles. For every color in the design, a separate screen (stencil) is created, through which the ink is pressed onto the fabric. The advantage: For large quantities and simple designs, screen printing is very economical. The disadvantage: setup costs are high, color gradients and photo prints are only possible to a limited extent, and small runs are expensive.
What is DTF printing?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. The design is printed onto a transfer film and then applied to the textile using a heat press. DTF requires no printing plates or screens – which makes the process more flexible and economical, especially for small runs and complex designs.
DTF vs. screen printing – A direct comparison
Minimum quantity: Screen printing often requires 50–100 pieces for setup costs to be profitable. DTF is economical starting from 1 piece.
Color complexity: Screen printing is expensive with many colors. DTF supports over 16 million colors, including gradients and photo prints, at no extra charge.
Quality: Both processes deliver high-quality results. DTF prints are soft, detailed, and wash-resistant.
Costs for small quantities: DTF has a clear advantage for 1–100 pieces. Screen printing is only worthwhile for larger runs.
Textile versatility: DTF works on almost all fabrics. Screen printing is best on smooth, even surfaces.
Our conclusion: When DTF, when screen printing?
DTF printing is ideal for: individual projects, small to medium quantities, complex designs, photo or gradient prints, and anyone who wants to order quickly and flexibly.
Screen printing makes sense for: very large runs (1,000+ pieces), single or two-color designs, and clients for whom unit cost is the only criterion.
At Markendruckerei, we have consciously chosen DTF printing – because we believe our customers deserve maximum flexibility. Send an inquiry now
